  • Thermal Baths

termeAt the beginning of the 3rd century AD, the Ancient Romans led by Consul Quintus FabiusRullianus, marched over the Cimini mountains and found various settlements scattered around the valleys of what was then Etruria, among which were Castel D’Asso, Cordigliano, Musarna, Surrena and Ferento. The Etruscan town of Surrena, today known as Viterbo, was built on the slopes of Duomo Hill and one of its streets wound its way towards the Dei Bagni plain, where thermal waters were already being used for therapeutic and other uses. The Roman army destroyed the settlements of Etruria, but conserved many aspects of its civilization including its refined appreciation of thermal baths. The baths were named after the population that had first discovered them, and until the end of the Roman Empire, they were referred to as the “TermeEtrusche” – “the Etruscan Thermal Baths”..
  • Bomarzo – Park of the Monsters

bomarzoThe so-called Park of the Monsters or Sacred Wood of Bomarzo, is a monumental complex situated at the slopes of a natural amphitheater. Vicino Orsini during the XVI century ordered the construction of some monuments that represent monstruos and mythological animals. The architects were Pirro Ligorio, Jacopo Barozzi from Vignola and other successors. He called the park Sacred Wood and consecrated it to his wife, Julia Farnese. There are also difficult architectural buildings such as the tilted house or some enigmatic statues that might refer to some alchemic ideas.
  • Civita Di Bagnoregio: 'the village that dies'

bagnoregioCivita is a village near Bagnoregio. Placed in isolated position, it is reachable only through a pedestrian bridge in armed cement. The cause of its isolation is the progressive erosion of the hill and the surrounding valley, which has given life to the typical forms of the “calanchis”. Today, this problem continues, posing the village the risk of disappearance, and that is why it is also called “the village that dies”.
  • Saint Rose Machine

santarosaThe tradition of the displacement of the Macchina of S. Rosa started on 4 September 1258, when, following the wish of Pope Alessandro IV, the intact body of the Saint of Viterbo was moved from the common fose of S Maria del Poggio to the Clarisas Monastery, and who will be later called “the Saint Child”, since she died at the very young of 18 years old, in March 1251. Since then, 750 years after, every September 3rd, at 9 p.m. Viterbo lives its more important celebration of tradition and faith: the displacement of the “Macchina of Saint Rosa”, an illuminated “tower” 28 meters tall and 50 quintals heavy, carried on the shoulders of 100 men, called “Facchini of Saint Rose”, along the darkened and windingstreets of Viterbo.
